The statement "It seems as though all changes in appearance not conforming to J-Spec or some form of OEM are considered horrible", hit the nail on the head. Fact is, it isn't considered horrible - it IS horrible. Here is what I see as the real kicker. Let's think of other cars - cars that today are regarded as true classics: MG's, early (50's, 60's 70's and some 80's) Porsches and Vettes, etc. What do real collectors and enthusiasts look for? A vehicle as close to original as possible! A 80 Vette with a 4 foot spoiler? It just looks stupid. An MG with a wild body kit? It just looks stupid. A 912 with neon lighting? Yes, I meant 912! Well, you get the idea. You could go on and on. Now if I were one to add a wing and neon underbody lighting to my classic car (whatever it may be) - I might think it looks damn good, but since I really am an educated and tasteful man, I'd know better than to think it could really still be considered desirable by real enthusiast. Not to disrespect the younger set here, but most of the outrageous modifications seen on these sites are the late teen/twenty-somethings.....and I'm not going to say I went through that phase (because I didn't). I truly believe I was born with good taste.
